Hocking Hills State Park

Old Man's Cave Trail
The moderately easy trail itself is an amazing piece of Civilian Conservation Corps craftsmanship, with fanciful bridges and tunnels.  The canyon walls have been etched by weathering and water seepage to produce a multitude of ledges and recesses, easy to imagine as homes for communities of odd small creatures.  The 'cave' is actually a giant rock shelter halfway up one canyon wall, a recess spacious enough to house a band of humans or larger beings.  The creek bed changes character continually as you follow it, partly in sculpted bedrock and partly in tree-hemmed sandy channels.

Cantwell Cliffs
The rugged trails here descend from the cliff tops on steep inclines of soil mixed with massive stone blocks.  Some trail segments bring you close to sheer bedrock, or through clefts where monoliths have barely separated from the mossy cliff face.  It is a bluff under visible, slow disintegration beneath the forest canopy, tree roots lending s hand in the destruction.

Rock House
Water has invaded a joint in the sandstone, hollowing it out to create a window-lined gallery on the cliff face.  The floor steps up and down along the length of the chamber,  making this a dynamic place for a story's large-group meeting or a challenging route for a foot race.  Woodland pigeons roost here, flying in a cloud through the high space at intervals.  The access trail is moderate in difficulty, visited by explorers of all ages.

Visitor Tips
  • The separate park properties are scattered, with winding half-hour drives through the hills between.  The town of Logan is a good central location for lodging and services.
